Bridging Policy and Practice: Making the European Nitrates Directive Work in the Field.
Translating a European directive into daily practices for those working in the fields means moving from regulatory requirements to operational management, without leaving farmers and technicians alone. The work carried out for the Regional Agency for the Development and Innovation of Agriculture of Lazio (ARSIAL) stemmed from this need: to strengthen awareness and implementation of the Nitrates Directive in Lazio’s Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs). Not theory, but concrete tools to comply with the obligations and improve business management.
formicablu intervened on multiple levels: organisational, content, and communication. We coordinated, technically and logistically, five provincial meetings in Rieti, Viterbo, Latina, Frosinone, and Rome, structuring a regional information cycle. At the same time, we developed the visual identity for the entire process: a coherent graphic system for events, materials, slides, and documentation, designed to clarify a complex subject.
To accompany the meetings, we designed and created an exhibition consisting of 40 panels dedicated to the individual ZVNs in Lazio. Each panel describes territorial characteristics, environmental issues, and regulatory principles, explaining, in an accessible manner, the identification criteria, the regulatory framework, and the operational implications for agricultural businesses. We oversaw the streaming and full recording of the events and organised the materials for online publication. The content was structured into thematic groups, with speakers, summary abstracts, and downloadable presentations, to ensure clear and organised consultation even after the meetings.
This project confirms that technical and regulatory communication is effective when it focuses on informed management—providing support, fostering dialogue, analysing data, and developing solutions based on real territorial needs.
